• Cantus Firmus by Tish Berlin

Start off the new year right by joining us on Monday, January 3, 2022 for a class by Tish Berlin. The Virtual Happy Hour starts at 7:00 pm with teaching at 7:30 pm on Zoom.  Tish will conduct the class on:

The Cantus Firmus: A Solid Rock to Stand On
Works by Michael Praetorius, J. S. Bach, and Elway Bevin

The class will explore pieces from England and Germany that use a cantus firmus, or pre-existing tune, as a basis for polyphonic works.  Jesus Christus Unser Heiland, a Lutheran hymn modeled on 15th-century text and melody, forms the basis for our duo by Michael Praetorius and four-part harmonization by J. S. Bach.  Finally, we’ll explore two pieces by Elway Bevin: a wonderful example of an In Nomine, and his setting of the Browning tune.

Tish teaches in California and at workshops around the country, including the Amherst Early Music Festival and the Oregon Coast Recorder Society Winds and Waves workshop.  She directs the Hidden Valley Early Music Road Scholar workshop, the San Francisco Early Music Society Music Discovery Workshop and several small workshops for Tibia Adventures in Music.  She also performs with the Farallon Recorder Quartet, Bertamo Trio, Calextone,  and the Sitka Trio and has performed as a guest artist with the San Francisco Symphony, the Carmel Bach Festival and the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra.
